UK recycling centre battery fires cost industry £1bn annually
New figures from the Environment Services Association reveal that fires at UK recycling centres are costing the industry £1 billion per year, a sharp increase from £150 million in 2021. The trade body reported 1,518 fires in the year to March 2026, with at least 541 directly attributed to lithium-ion batteries, though experts suspect the true proportion is closer to 70 percent.
